Abstract

This study is on long-term performance and catch-up strategies of retailers. The main factors of TNRs decision making are as follows: 1) CRE expansion through On-Off line store, 2) revenue expansion, 3) internalization advantage, 4) differentiation factors, and 5) long-term performance. The analysis results in terms of the general strategies of TNRs are as follows. First, CRE expansion through on-off line store has a positive influence on the long-term performance. Second, revenue expansion has a positive influence on the long-term performance. Thirdly, internalization advantage has a positive influence on the long-term performance. Lastly, in terms of the differential strategies of TNRs, it was found that Walmart prefers the complete ownership method; Carrefour engages in decision- making for high-potential markets; and TESCO focuses its decision-making on its preparations of pre-entry planning period and exchange rates. In the early stages of their expansion, TNRs face disadvantages and handicaps in local markets. They seek to acquire competitive and valuable CRE, establish competitive advantages by creating value in the CRE, and eventually seek to catch up with local indigenous retailers in the local markets through general and differential strategies of TNRs.
