Abstract
The Chinese adverb “chayidian” (almost) has been a research focus. The previous study mainly discussed the grammatical meaning of “chayidian”, the derivation of “chayidian mei P” (D-type, almost not) and how to distinguish the two semantic values of “chayidian mei P” construction. From the perspective of Langacker’s cognitive grammar, this paper suggests a new interpretation of these constructions: “chayidian” is a counter-expectation marker word, “chayidian mei P” (D-type) is derived from speaker’s profile, and the “expectation rule” constraints the legitimacy of the “chayidian” construction.
