1. When the lignins of the stems and bolls of cotton were decomposed with metallic sodium in Iiquid ammonia, mixtures of phenols were obtained that gave identical paper chromatograms. 2. The following products were identified in the mixtures by paper chtomatography. dihydrougenol. 1-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl) propanol-1 and -3, and 1-(4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)propane 3. By destructive reduction of cotton stem, boll, and seed hull meal with sodium in ammonium mixtures of phenols were obtained that gave identical but paler paper chromatograms than phenol mixtures from the corresponding isolated lignins.
