A Student’s Reflection on the Digital Heritage Lab

This is a reflection on my professional placement at Swinburne University’s Digital Heritage Lab, exploring the role the lab plays in the preservation of Australian digital artefacts like computer software, video games and media artworks. As technology advances, the lab confronts the challenges posed by obsolete infrastructure, machine dependency, and the fleeting window of opportunity for preservation. The absence of standardised guidelines is addressed through collaborative efforts within the EaaSI (Emulation as a Service Infrastructure) network. My placement provided firsthand experience of the variety of challenges associated with digital preservation, emphasising the need for ongoing experimentation and perseverance in the face of failure. The experience gained from the placement underscores the importance of developing ideas and approaches through practical application in the field of digital archiving.

Both digital and analog audio-visual materials, are stored on physical media. However, over time, these storage media are subject to various issues like physical and chemical deterioration, obsolescence due to technological advancements, and limited lifespans. These challenges inevitably affect the audio-visual contents they contain. In response, numerous institutions and experts worldwide have been implementing conservation treatments and digitization strategies to ensure the long-term preservation and management of audio–visual materials. This issue also applies to audio–visual-based new media artworks. However, because the value and significance of general audio–visual materials differ from those of new media artworks, different approaches are required when applying preservation and management strategies. This study examines the overall digitization and conservation process of audio–visual-based new media artworks at South Korea's Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and proposes strategies for their long-term preservation and management.

Preserving the Cultural Heritage of Indonesian Society through Digital Preservation in Libraries

Digital preservation is crucial in safeguarding Indonesia's cultural heritage by ensuring historical documents, artifacts, and traditional knowledge remain accessible for future generations. However, digitalization efforts face significant challenges related to technical infrastructure, legal frameworks, and public engagement. This study aims to analyze the role of libraries in digital preservation, identifying key benefits, challenges, and potential strategies for sustainable implementation. Using a thematic analysis approach, data was collected through an extensive literature review of 500 academic articles filtered into 16 relevant studies. The results indicate that digitalization enhances accessibility and efficiency in preserving cultural materials but is hindered by financial constraints, insufficient technological resources, and unclear legal protections. Moreover, the lack of trained professionals in digital archiving further complicates the implementation process. The findings highlight the need for stronger government policies, improved funding, and collaborative efforts among libraries, policymakers, and cultural institutions. The study recommends integrating advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and blockchain to strengthen digital preservation strategies and ensure long-term sustainability. Additionally, hybrid approaches that merge digital and physical experiences can enhance public engagement with cultural heritage. This research contributes to the growing discourse on digital heritage conservation by providing a comprehensive analysis of current challenges and opportunities, serving as a valuable reference for stakeholders involved in cultural preservation and digital library management.

Online Video Game Therapy for Mental Health Concerns: A Review

There has been research on the use of offline video games for therapeutic purposes but online video game therapy is still fairly under-researched. Online therapeutic interventions have only recently included a gaming component. Hence, this review represents a timely first step toward taking advantage of these recent technological and cultural innovations, particularly for the treatment of special-needs groups such as the young, the elderly and people with various conditions such as ADHD, anxiety and autism spectrum disorders. A review integrating research findings on two technological advances was conducted: the home computer boom of the 1980s, which triggered a flood of research on therapeutic video games for the treatment of various mental health conditions; and the rise of the internet in the 1990s, which caused computers to be seen as conduits for therapeutic interaction rather than replacements for the therapist. We discuss how video games and the internet can now be combined in therapeutic interventions, as attested by a consideration of pioneering studies. Future research into online video game therapy for mental health concerns might focus on two broad types of game: simple society games, which are accessible and enjoyable to players of all ages, and online worlds, which offer a unique opportunity for narrative content and immersive remote interaction with therapists and fellow patients. Both genres might be used for assessment and training purposes, and provide an unlimited platform for social interaction. The mental health community can benefit from more collaborative efforts between therapists and engineers, making such innovations a reality.

It's about Time: Research Challenges in Digital Archiving and Long-term Preservation, II

Recognizing repeated concerns over the current state of knowledge about long-term digital preservation, the National Science Foundation and the Library of Congress convened a workshop entitled “Research Challenges in Digital Archiving and Long-term Preservation” in April 2002. The main goals of the workshop were to identify the research challenges in digital archiving and long-term preservation; set priorities for research based on input from stakeholders; and propose mechanisms that could build a community of researchers and foster cross-fertilization among research projects. The workshop consisted of plenary presentations and discussions of the various challenges in digital archiving as well as small group sessions to define and set priorities for research. It also provided an opportunity for experts in computer science, mass storage systems, archival science, digital libraries, and information management to discuss obstacles to preserving digital information with government managers and other stakeholders. This report presents a summary of the workshop discussions and recommendations for future research projects.

Keeping the Game Alive: Evaluating Strategies for the Preservation of Console Video Games

Interactive fiction and video games are part of our cultural heritage. As original systems cease to work because of hardware and media failures, methods to preserve obsolete video games for future generations have to be developed. The public interest in early video games is high, as exhibitions, regular magazines on the topic and newspaper articles demonstrate. Moreover, games considered to be classic are rereleased for new generations of gaming hardware. However, with the rapid development of new computer systems, the way games look and are played changes constantly. When trying to preserve console video games one faces problems of classified development documentation, legal aspects and extracting the contents from original media like cartridges with special hardware. Furthermore, special controllers and non-digital items are used to extend the gaming experience making it difficult to preserve the look and feel of console video games.This paper discusses strategies for the digital preservation of console video games. After a short overview of console video game systems, there follows an introduction to digital preservation and related work in common strategies for digital preservation and preserving interactive art. Then different preservation strategies are described with a specific focus on emulation. Finally a case study on console video game preservation is shown which uses the Planets preservation planning approach for evaluating preservation strategies in a documented decision-making process. Experiments are carried out to compare different emulators as well as other approaches, first for a single console video game system, then for different console systems of the same era and finally for systems of all eras. Comparison and discussion of results show that, while emulation works very well in principle for early console video games, various problems exist for the general use as a digital preservation alternative. We show what future work has to be done to tackle these problems.

Key words: - Digital Preservation, Developing Countries, Information Management, Digital repositories Abstract: - Digital preservation plays a vital role in safeguarding cultural, historical, administrative, and scientific records in the digital era. Although technological advancements have enhanced access and storage capabilities, developing countries face distinct and persistent challenges in implementing sustainable digital preservation strategies. These include limited financial resources, outdated technological infrastructure, and frequent power and internet disruptions. Additionally, a shortage of skilled professionals and technical expertise significantly hampers long-term preservation efforts. Many institutions in the Global South operate without comprehensive policies, adequate organizational support, or clear legal frameworks to guide digital archiving practices. Technical issues such as format obsolescence, media degradation, and the lack of standardized metadata further complicate preservation efforts. Legal and copyright restrictions often inhibit digitization and limit access to preserved materials. Institutional fragmentation and high staff turnover also threaten the continuity and effectiveness of preservation initiatives. Case studies from countries such as Nigeria, Pakistan, India, and Aruba reveal both common challenges and innovative responses. These include leveraging international collaborations, utilizing open-source tools, and engaging local communities to bridge resource gaps. Notably, national initiatives like India’s National Digital Preservation Program illustrate the value of policy-driven approaches. However, the absence of regional cooperation and harmonized legal standards remains a significant barrier. Addressing these challenges requires targeted investments in infrastructure, capacity-building, and collaborative platforms. Ultimately, successful digital preservation in the Global South depends on context-sensitive, inclusive, and scalable solutions tailored to the unique needs and constraints of each country.

The economy of free and open source software in the preservation of digital artefacts

PurposeFree and open source software (FOSS) brings many benefits to digital preservation; however it is not “free”. If the context in which free and open source software tools are created and employed is examined, it becomes clear that: the sustainability of any software (FOSS, custom or commercial) to ensure the preservation of the digital heritage will depend on careful assessment of, and provision for, the costs (implicit and explicit) entailed in the production and continued employment of these tools. The purpose of this paper is to focus on FOSS and archiving of the digital heritage.Design/methodology/approachPortico, a not‐for‐profit digital preservation service, explores the costs of FOSS based on its experiences as a working archive with an extremely long time horizon.FindingsThere are considerable benefits to FOSS, including its openness and the broad‐based testing of it in real‐world situations. FOSS tools can provide considerable cost savings over proprietary tools. However, FOSS is neither free to use, nor to create, nor to maintain. Digital preservation organizations must inventory not only the FOSS tools in the preservation arsenal, but the network of sustaining tools (FOSS and otherwise), documentation, and “tribal knowledge” that make these tools effectively usable. The risks to sustainability of this network of resources must be assessed, and determine what it will cost to keep them viable. Strategies will have to be considered and implemented for providing the means to sustain these resources. An engaged community of use is the best guarantor of the vitality of any FOSS tool. As that community wanes, it becomes even more essential to capture the significant properties and domain knowledge about that tool. Creators of new software in the digital preservation space have a particular obligation to provide and maintain information about the significant properties of that software.Originality/valueThe paper shows how Portico brings its practical experiences integrating multiple FOSS tools to bear on an analysis of the costs to creating and maintaining these tools over the long‐term.

Preserving and ensuring long-term access to digitally born legal information

Written laws, records and legal materials form the very foundation of a democratic society. Lawmakers, legal scholars and everyday citizens alike need, and are entitled, to access the current and historic materials that comprise, explain, define, critique and contextualize their laws and legal institutions. The preservation of legal information in all formats is imperative. Thus far, the twenty-first century has witnessed unprecedented mass-scale acceptance and adoption of digital culture, which has resulted in an explosion in digital information. However, digitally born materials, especially those that are published directly and independently to the Web, are presently at an extremely high risk of permanent loss. Our legal heritage is no exception to this phenomenon, and efforts must be put forth to ensure that our current body of digital legal information is not lost. The authors explored the role of the United States law library community in the preservation of digital legal information. Through an online survey of state and academic law library directors, it was determined that those represented in the sample recognize that digitally born legal materials are at high risk for loss, yet their own digital preservation projects have primarily focused upon the preservation of digitized print materials, rather than digitally born materials. Digital preservation activities among surveyed libraries have been largely limited by a lack of funding, staffing and expertise; however, these barriers could be overcome by collaboration with other institutions, as well as participation in a large-scale regional or national digital preservation movement, which would allow for resource-sharing among participants. One such collaborative digital preservation program, the Chesapeake Project, is profiled in the article and explored as a collaborative effort that may be expanded upon or replicated by other institutions and libraries tackling the challenges of digital preservation.

Diversity, Inclusion, and Digital Preservation

We have learned from the debate on diversity and inclusion that archiving is not neutral or unbiased even though it is presented in this way. Seen from the perspective of cultural humility, we need to keep learning and challenge power imbalances from both the individual and the organizational level. This article discusses what this means for digital preservation concepts.

Along with the development of technology and information, it plays an important role in all aspects, one example is in the field of archives. Developments in technology and information in the field of archiving can be seen from changes in archive storage from conventional storage to digital storage. Changes in storage media require agencies to preserve archives using digital media. With the digitization of photo archives, it is also necessary to insert a digital watermark as a sign of ownership of the photo archive. This study uses the Gap Analysis method and the resulting product is a watermark on digital photo archives. The works in the form of watermarks on each photo archive are made using software, namely Adobe Photoshop. The watermark will be inserted into several photo archives in the photo archives of the Blora Regency Library and Archives Service. Advances in technology have resulted in records and documents made on paper being transferred into electronic media or created directly in electronic media. Thus electronic records management is a very appropriate choice in increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of government agencies. The purpose of this study is to find out the benefits or advantages of archive authentication including the procedures for authenticating archives by considering various aspects of decency.

日本光榮版「三國志X」教育功能之研究

電玩,現今時下年輕人最為盛行的娛樂休閒活動之一;同時卻也是家長們最不希望孩子們去碰的娛樂活動。原因在於家長們認為電玩遊戲的內容有可能會影響青少年,使其產生言行上的偏差、暴力化。只是青少年們在生活中能夠接觸到的諸多娛樂媒體當中,並不盡然只有電玩帶有暴力色彩,電視節目、網路、動漫畫等均有暴力描寫情節。筆者認為隨著所選擇電玩軟體內容之不同,電玩遊戲亦可成為具有正面教育、教化功能之娛樂活動。因此筆者在指導教授.馬耀輝教授的指導之下,選用了日本光榮公司所開發的歷史戰略模擬遊戲.「三國志X」為題材,針對其在遊戲中對三國歷史的查證翔實度、表現手法等進行研究,以釐清此類運用歷史題材之電玩遊戲,是否有辦法提升使用電玩之青少年的歷史認知能力。 在先行研究方面,大致分成社會學及心理學角度來看以電玩為議題的相關研究與成果。並簡要介紹了三國志系列遊戲的演進與設定,最後再將研究題材所設定的歷史事件與正史進行對照比較,結果發現「三國志X」裡所安插的歷史事件與正史『三國志』之符合度達7成,其餘三成不合史實。但因著電玩所具備的多媒體特性(運用動畫、圖片、音樂;提供主動參與之虛擬體驗),能夠讓使用電玩之青少年透過遊戲過程,更深入了解到歷史事件的發生年代、相關人物、過程及結果,而得出了確實具有提升青少年之歷史認知能力效果之結論。

Developing AI Video Analysis Systems to Explore Human Behavior in Infant and Ethnographic Footage

The advancement of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has enabled the storage of large volumes of video data. In recent years, research has focused on technologies for extracting this video data in formats suitable for specific purposes. For instance, it is possible to derive insights about developmental processes from daily life video data or to extract specific segments of ethnographic footage for artistic expression.Scholars stress the importance of analyzing daily videos of infants to understand their developmental processes, but watching all infants' daily videos would require an enormous amount of human effort. Therefore, we considered employing AI technology, which has advanced rapidly in recent years. This presentation will present two examples of our AI-based video analysis to demonstrate the possibilities and challenges involved.In our first study, focused on an infant, we examined the possibility of using object-detection, action-recognition, and caption-generation AI to detect infant movements for the purpose of developmental research and monitoring. The object-detection AI, YOLOv8, extracted images surrounding the area detected as a human in infant videos. The caption-generation AIs CATR and BLIP were then used on each image to evaluate whether they could detect infants and provide information about their behavior. SlowFast, an action-recognition AI, was also used to detect infant behavior in the videos. On the basis of the results of these studies of individual AIs, we will discuss the potential of combining them. Ethnographic video data presents similar challenges.Another example of using AI is the experiential video installation "Diverse and Universal Camera," a media artwork that uses AI to analyze ethnographic footage. This project employed SlowFast and YOLOv8 to develop a system that automatically labels the actions of people and objects in videos and enables efficient video retrieval for exhibitions of ethnographic footage archives.In these examples, AI tools process amounts of video data that are too large to be managed by humans, extracting parts of the video that merit human attention to provide a better understanding of human behavior. One challenge is that installing multiple cameras in a household to capture everyday situations often necessitates reducing the video resolution due to storage and network bandwidth constraints. Moreover, because of the need to cover wide areas, an infant frequently appears small in the video, and other objects commonly appear in it, such as family members and the infant's bedding and toys. Ethnographic footage is also difficult to analyze, as it is typically old, in black-and-white, and in low resolution. Furthermore, each segment of footage, shot with different themes, emphasizes varying subjects or objects.We are investigating methods of using AI to address these problems, such as cropping individual image segments, classification of video by generated captions, and diffusion in the time direction. We believe that these methods can be applied to other video types, significantly enhancing the potential for research that analyses everyday human behavior.

Combining X-ray micro-CT technology and 3D printing for the digital preservation and study of a 19th century cantonese chess piece with intricate internal structure

Laser scanning has been widely adopted for the digital preservation and study of cultural heritage artifacts. However, surface scans alone are not sufficient for a variety of intricate objects such as the Cantonese chess pieces that were delicately carved from ivory throughout the 19th Century. These pieces incorporate a puzzle ball base, which is comprised of several balls, one inside the other. In this project we explore the use of x-ray micro-CT technology to scan the piece with a voxel separation of less than 9 μm, By using masking and editing software we generate 3D surface models of the separate parts to enable close inspection of both exterior and interior sections. Visualizing the dataset at a much larger scale enables the viewer to appreciate the fine surface details imperceivable in the original piece. Finally, 3D scaled versions are printed where the small details are also easily observed and the inner balls within the puzzle ball base move freely. The work flow demonstrated in this article has important possibilities in digital preservation, documentation, and presentation.
