Abstract

The presentation in a meaningful way of the data from large-scale and/or longterm current-meter stations is difficult. It is suggested here that a very useful statistic in this field is the ratio of the Vector Mean to the Scalar Mean of a currentmeter record expressed as a percentage. It is proposed that the new statistic should be called the Neumann factor and examples of ways in which it is already being used routinely are given. Two of its limitations are also pointed out.
