Abstract

The scattering cross section of an extended elastic body is usually a very irregular function of frequency. This is partly due to the vibrational characteristics of the body and partly due to interference effects. The related problem of predicting the response of a body to localized excitation or a reverberent field has been analyzed using the statistical energy analysis and the mean value method with some success. In this paper, statistical methods are employed to predict aspects of the acoustic cross section of some relatively simple, extended objects.
