Abstract

The Interior Structure and Internal Dynamical Evolution (INSIDE) Jupiter mission was proposed and accepted for Step 2 conceptual design as part of Discovery 98. It will achieve fundamental new advances in our understanding of Jupiter and extra-solar planets during its 15-month mission at Jupiter with its four science investigations. It will be the first solar-powered, Discovery-class mission to the outer planets. A solar-powered mission to Jupiter poses several challenges for the spacecraft designer including a harsh radiation environment, limited launch mass, extreme thermal conditions and long-cruise duration. The INSIDE Jupiter team has resolved these challenges at minimal cost through the use of recently available mission enabling technologies, efficient trajectories and orbit designs, simple operations, and innovative technical design features.
