Carbon dots (CDs) with different doping elements were successfully synthesized via a simple hydrothermal strategy. 3-amino-4-chlorophenylboronic acid, 3-aminobenzeneboronic acid, aniline, and benzene were used as precursors, respectively. The B/N co-doping CDs (BNCDs) derived from 3-aminobenzeneboronic acid show brightest fluorescence among the CDs products with quantum yield at 0.15. The fluorescence of BNCDs exhibits good photostability and excitation-independent emission behavior. The bright blue emission of BNCDs can be quenched by serine, which is a kind of neutral aliphatic amino acid containing hyroxyl groups with polarity. It is possibly due to the molecular collision between excited state of BNCDs and the ground state of serine. BNCDs can be served as fluorophore probe for the assay of serine based on the efficient quenching effect. The approach for the determination of serine shows a high sensitivity with a detection limit at 0.14nM, which is lower than those of previous works. Furthermore, the present BNCDs system can be employed to monitor serine in real food and biological samples. The strategy may be a potential way for the application in food safety and biomedicine fields.

In this paper, Ganoderma lucidum bran was explored as the precursor to fabricate biomass activated carbon. When potassium hydroxide was selected as an activator (1:6, mass ratio of AC-12 to potassium hydroxide), and the activation condition was 700 °C at 5 h, the highest specific surface area reached 3147 m2 g-1. Carbon dots were prepared with citric acid monohydrate and thiourea as precursors and then loaded onto the surface of activated carbon by a simple and green method. Activated carbon for dual-functional had a high adsorption capacity. Additionally, based on its unique optical properties, the fluorescence response for detecting copper ion was established. The fluorescence intensity of the materials decreased linearly with the increase of copper ion concentration, in the range of 10-50 nmol L-1. The research opened up a new way for applying biomass activated carbon in the field of adsorption and detection. Highlights: (1) Carbon dots were loaded on the surface of activated carbon; (2) the simultaneous adsorption and detection were realized; (3) it provides a way for the preparation of dual-functional materials.

REPORT ON THE 3RD WORKSHOP OF THE EUROPEAN UNION CONCERTED ACTION—EVALUATION/VALIDATION OF NOVEL BIOSENSORS IN REAL ENVIRONMENTAL AND FOOD SAMPLES, MAÓ, MENORCA (BALEARIC ISLAND), SPAIN, NOVEMBER 2–4, 2003 by Francesco Ricci and Giuseppe Palleschi, Dipartimento di Scienze e Tecnologie Chimiche, Università di Roma Tor Vergata, Via della Ricerca Scientifica, Rome, Italy ABSTRACT: The 3rd Workshop of the European Concerted Action “Evaluation/Validation of novel biosensors in real environmental and food samples” was held on the Island of Menorca for 3 days (2–4 November 2003) and was attended by more than 50 participants from EU countries and the USA. During the 3 days, participants presented their results on the development of new types of biosensors for environmental and food analysis application and on the validations of such probes. The workshop was divided into five different oral presentation sessions including pathogen detection (Session 1), immunosensors and immunoassay (Session 2), receptor assays (Session 3), biosensor validation (Session 4), enzyme‐based biosensors (Session 5) and a general poster session. The first day of the meeting was dedicated to the welcome and introduction and to the Session 1. During the second day (3rd of November) Sessions 2, 3, and 4 together with a poster session took place. The last day (4th of November) was devoted to Session 5 and to the final remarks of the meeting. The first session was preceded by a welcome given by the meeting organizer Prof. D. Barcelò and by a scientific and economic general report of the project leader (Prof. D. P. Nikolelis) on the general activity of the concerted action. Prof. Nikolelis summarised the activities carried out during the first 2 years as well as the possible future interactions and the future needings for the conclusion of the concerted action. Copper and iron are essential elements for life, and their imbalance, or their excessively high concentrations, can lead to a range of serious issues, including neurodegenerative diseases, metabolic disorders, and environmental pollution. The development of efficient detection technologies is urgently required for water quality safety assessment, early disease diagnosis, and industrial process monitoring. Carbon dots (CDs) have gradually surpassed traditional quantum dots and organic dyes due to their unique photoluminescence properties, low environmental toxicity, and functionalizable surfaces, becoming a research focus in the field of metal ion sensing. Although significant progress has been made in the application of CDs for heavy metal detection in recent years, existing reviews have primarily focused on highly toxic ions such as mercury, lead, and chromium, with limited systematic summaries on the detection of copper and iron ions. This review focuses on the application of CDs in copper and iron ion detection, summarizing and categorizing the synthesis and modification methods of blue, green, and red fluorescent CDs, common quenching mechanisms, specific research progress in copper and iron ion detection using CDs, and the detection mechanisms of CDs that can simultaneously detect or differentially identify copper and iron ions. Finally, innovative research currently being conducted in the detection mode is introduced. This work aims to provide a reference for the synthesis and detection of CDs applied to copper and iron ion detection.

A new dual-signals peptide-based probe FAHK was rationally designed and successfully synthesized for sequential detection of Cu 2+ and glyphosate throughfluorescence and colorimetric sensing method. The limit of detections (LODs) for Cu 2+ and glyphosate were calculated to be 49.7 nM and 66.3 nM, respectively. Additionally, FAHK not only demonstrated excellent accuracy in the determination of real food, water and vegetables samples, but also was applied for fluorescence imaging Cu 2+ and glyphosate in two biological systems. Besides, test strips experiments showed that FAHK has extraordinary potential in environmental monitoring and food analysis applications. Meanwhile, we explored the application of FAHK in molecular logic gates, and a visual portable sensing platform was established via the smartphone color Picker App system, successfully achieving semi-quantitative analysis of Cu 2+ and glyphosate. More importantly, FAHK has successfully achieved the detection of glyphosate residues on six food surfaces and soil samples with satisfactory results. • Dual-signals peptide-based probe FAHK was fabricated for continuous detection of Cu 2+ and glyphosate. • The detection limit of 49.7 nM for Cu 2+ and 66.3 nM for glyphosate. • FAHK was applied for determination of Cu 2+ and glyphosate in biological system and food samples. • The practical utility FAHK was studied using test strips, logic gate and smartphone App . • FAHK achieved naked-eye detection of Cu 2+ and glyphosate residues on surfaces of food and soil.
