Abstract

The problem of 'heat transfer between a fluid and the wall of a pipe in which the fluid moves with different velocity profiles was studied by several authors and reviewed by Drew CI~. Graetz [2]found a solution for uniform velocity in terms of an infinite series, which is difficult to evaluate for terms greater than the fifth~ and therefore satisfactory'resu/ts for C, raetz number Erea~r than 500 were not obtained. Boussinesq [~ solved the transport equation for a flat plate~ obtainin E a relationship between the Nusselt number and the C, raetz number. This solution can be applied to cylindrical tubes ~for short transfer lenghts, namely at high values of the Graetz number. Metzner [~] proposed an equation, based on Boussinesq solution, that can be applied for Graetz number above IOO. For a parabolic velocity profile a solution of the heat transfer equation was presented by Graetz [2] arrivin E to a relationship similar to that for a flat velocity distribution, and
