Abstract
Abstract We show that dry snow slab avalanches that are artificially triggered (e.g. by a skier) may result from a tensile failure of the slab crown induced by respectively a quasistatic or an unstable shear propagation of a basal crack at the slab / substrate interface. Avalanches of the latter type only have an initial extension that may widely include the skier’s position, and are favoured by large snow thicknesses and slopes centred around a critical value of 35.3o.
