Abstract

The generation of metallic oxide aerosols was accomplished using a Lovelace and a Collision nebulizer with aqueous solutions of metallic carbonates, acetates, and oxalates. Solution of oxalates in oxalic acid were also studied. The generated aerosols were subsequently dried, thermally decomposed, and cooled to yield the corresponding metallic oxide. The operating conditions of the system were varied and the physical and chemical characteristics of the resulting aerosols were determined. The mass median diameters of the aerosols generated were in the sub-micron range, which is of interest for inhalation studies. The aerosols generated included those of cadmium, nickel, and manganese.
