Abstract

In 1962, the natural foci of plague in the Republic of Vietnam began to evidence renewed activity. Early attempts to control the outbreaks with DDT apparently failed and the disease became widespread throughout the northern 2/3 of the country. Tests on wild-caught fleas collected in Saigon and Nhatrang showed that the fleas ( Xenopsylla cheopis ) in these 2 cities were resistant to DDT (Cavanaugh et al., 1968, Amer. J. Publ. Hlth Hyg. 58 : 742–52).
