Abstract

A simple method is introduced to determine well loss in the pumping well. This method is based on homogenising variable discharge pumping tests and can be applied to confined, leaky, and unconfined aquifers. The method is also applicable where the aquifer is heterogeneous or where there are boundary effects. After homogenising the pumping test data, based on an obvious logic, aquifer losses and well losses are separated. Therefore the proposed method directly calculates the well loss in the pumping well and it does not need to use the equations and coefficients of Jacob 1 and Rorabaugh 2 methods. Such an advantage allows the well loss to be directly evaluated for normal tests and in addition to step-drawdown tests. The direct analysis of pumping test data not only increase the accuracy of the results but also provides a simple and quick method which can be carried out using manual computation even allowing field analysis of the test data.
