Abstract
Described is a transnasal plastic suction catheter system for use in laser surgery of the upper aerodigestive tracts. The appropriately sized catheter is passed through the nostril into the nasopharynx, oropharynx, or hypopharynx, depending on the site of the lesion being treated. Constant, low suction is used to remove steam, smoke, and fine particulate debris as it is produced by the laser beam. This system requires no adaptation of conventional instruments, frees both of the surgeon's hands, is automatic, and of minimal cost.
