Abstract

The effective cross section in the general case of elastic scattering of γ-rays on arbitrary systems of spin 1 2 is expressed in terms of six form factors. In the case when the γ-ray energy ω is considerably smaller than the mass of the π-meson the cross section is expressed in terms of the electric charge, the anomalous magnetic moment and the electric and magnetic polarizabilities of the scattering system. For elastic scattering on protons the expression obtained agrees well with experimental data up to energies of 100 to 150 MeV if the electric polarizability of the proton is α = 9 · 10 −4 fm 3 and its magnetic polarizability is β = 2 · 10 −4 fm 3. Analytic expressions for the polarizabilities α and β are obtained using double dispersion relations.
