Abstract

American missionaries and educators were founders of Methodist schools and churches in Brazil, between the second half of the nineteenth century and the first decades of the twentieth century; they had as mission the establishment of Protestant civilization, habits and customs in any country chosen as field for sowing the Word of God. In addition, the Methodist civilizing project planned to reach the soul of children through a magazine aimed at them: the Bem-te-vi Magazine. The purpose of this article is to understand the construction and dissemination of child image printed on the pages of the Magazine. The results obtained show the Methodist plans to establish a civilized childhood and the practices undertaken in this direction.

Resumo: Os missionários e educadores norte-americanos, fundadores de igrejas e de escolas metodistas no Brasil, entre a segunda metade do século XIX e as primeiras décadas do século XX, apresentavam como missão a implantação da civilização, dos hábitos e dos costumes protestantes no país escolhido como campo para semeadura da Palavra de Deus. Além da fundação dos colégios, o projeto civilizatório metodista previa alcançar a alma das crianças, por meio da criação de uma revista voltada a elas, a Revista Bem-te-vi. Este trabalho tem por objetivo compreender a construção e a difusão da imagem de criança impressa nas páginas da Revista. Os resultados alcançados evidenciam os planos metodistas para estabelecer uma infância civilizada e as práticas empreendidas nessa direção.
