Abstract

It is known that the gene at the E-locus in the Gifu Native Fowl is e+ or ey. This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between the pattern of down color and the sex in ey ey chicks. Results obtained were as follows.Among 1024 yellow down chicks obtained in this study, 455 (44.4%) chicks exhibited solid yellow color, 206 (20.1%) yellow down with brown or gray spot on the head, and 363 (35.4%) yellow down with diluted brown or gray stripe on the head and back. The sex of each chicks was determined by observation of their plumage during 8-10 weeks after hatching. About 94.3% of the chicks with solid yellow color were males, while about 16.7% of the chicks with spot or diluted stripe were males.
