Abstract

A relationship between the steady-state corrosion potential E corr and the logarithm of the critical c.d. † for passivity I c is described. The relationship, E corr = − log I c + K, is shown to be valid for the 300 series austenitic stainless steels, including Types-303, -304, and -316. A theoretical basis for the observed dependence is derived from electrode kinetic theory, and a model is proposed which relates the kinetics of the anodic dissolution process to the residual impurity content of the steels. † The symbol I has been used to signify current density (c.d.).
