Abstract

The dwarfed plant of Hypnodendron auricomum is a distinct species, Hypnodendron opacum. It differs from H. auricomum in the much smaller plant, smaller stipe and branch leaves, strong proration of laminal cells of stipe leaves, narrower theca, larger spores, and the exclusively epiphytic habit. A refinement of H. auricomum itself is now needed: Hypnodendron auricomum subsp. sumatranum is newly recognized. The genus Hypnodendron is one of the most strik- ing mosses distributed in Malesia and adjacent re- gions. Touw (1971) recently published an intensive revision of the genus. He recognized 25 species and many infraspecific taxa. Touw reported seven species of Hypnodendron from Seram Island, west of New Guinea: Hypno- dendron auricomum subsp. auricomum, H. den- droides, H. diversifolium, H. milnei subsp. kor- thalsii, H. reinwardtii subsp. caducifolium, H. subspininervium subsp. arborescens, and H. vitiense. However, in the course of a study of moss flora of the island, I encountered a curious Hypnodendron species. It clearly belongs to the section Leiocarpos on the basis of the smooth theca and the stipe com- pletely covered by leaves, but shows several features different from those of H. auricomum, which has
