Abstract

A procedure to investigate the molecular process of DNA repair is described. Undergraduate students irradiate strains of bacteria with UV light to induce pyrimidine dimer formation, Students then qualitatively and quantitatively determine the amount of light and dark repair that takes place. This laboratory experiment uses relatively simple equipment and provides opportunities for an inquiry-based approach.
