Abstract

A quantitative method for measuring the activity of individual amoebae in vitro is described. Trophozoites of three strains of Entamoeba histolytica, IP-106, NIH:200, and DKB, were compared and measurable differences in behaviour and activity between the three strains were observed. Although the total number of pseudopodia produced by amoebae was the same for the three strains tested, amoebae of strains IP-106 and NIH:200 moved farther during a 5-min period than did those of strain DKB. This correlates with a more tortuous track of the latter strain.
