A Practice of Web-Based Sustainable Preservation Risk Management System for Digital Libraries in China
While many research projects in the world have been addressing challenges posed by digital preservation, digital libraries in China have their own native problems that have never been addressed before. Similar problems may occur in other countries, and their memory institutions may be less prepared to handle them. Quite often, information in the native special digital objects is also unique in world and requires more precise preservation. This paper analyses the requirements and challenges of digital libraries in China and describes a practice of sustainable preservation risk management method based on web service technology. This system demonstrates an architecture that provides a minimal approach to handle the native problems, which can be easily ported to similar situations. It also provides a way to leverage the existing tools/services. And to mitigate the lack-of-professionals problem in digital preservation, multiple preservation risks are managed, which can help schedule the preservation actions efficiently.

PurposeFashion supply chain (FSC) research has identified two important issues of sustainability management and risk management. However, investigation of these issues is relatively sparse and has primarily been independent with little combinatory research, despite their important interrelationships. The purpose of this paper is to address that gap by critically reviewing extant literature to synthesise important sustainability risk issues in FSCs and proposing an empirical research agenda.Design/methodology/approachThis paper uses a structured literature review approach and Denyer and Tranfield’s (2009) context, intervention, mechanisms and outcome (CIMO) criteria for critical analysis to enable the development of future empirical research areas.FindingsWhile sustainability and risk are discussed independently in the supply chain literature, combinatory discussions are very limited, despite the interdependence of these concepts. There is little substantial research on sustainability risk in global FSCs and therefore, an empirical research agenda is proposed with the four research directions to address the gap and take forward the notion of supply chain sustainability risk management in FSCs: definition; organisation and management; influence on performance; and development of a conceptual framework.Research limitations/implicationsThis paper provides a critical literature review and thus lacks empirical study.Practical implicationsThis paper highlights important issues in sustainability risk management for FSCs and presents an agenda for future empirical research.Originality/valueThis paper contributes by providing a combinatory synthesis of sustainability and risk management in FSC literature and an agenda for future empirical research.

PurposeThe aim of this paper is to provide an overview of Chinese digital library (DL) projects via the corresponding web sites, It also seeks to illustrate the current situation of DLs in China by offering insights into the digitization of resources, technologies and services.Design/methodology/approachA questionnaire was designed on the basis of the definition and features of digital libraries, together with the relevant library homepages and services. Overall, ten comprehensive universities and their library web sites, five public libraries and one science library were selected for comparison and analysis focusing on the content set‐up, digital resources, navigation systems, mainstream modes, home‐grown databases construction, user instruction training programs etc. Other issues including the virtual reference, service (VRS), academic information resource portal and integrated searching system or platform, personalized service, logon and authentication are also discussed.FindingsAll the selected libraries are operational digital libraries or prototypes. The electronic or digital resources are made up of two parts and the mainstream modes are service‐oriented. Most have their own library information portals and provided integrated searching. However, there are some defects in term unification on some home pages, unified retrieval platform selection among various databases, and navigation system construction.Practical implicationsThis paper presents a perspective of how DLs in China have been developing in the past few years. It also indicates the existing problems and difficulties and suggests the practical ways to optimize the application, standards, laws and rules, personal information environment, logon and authentication based on encryption. In addition, Open Access resources' utilization, conflict between copyright protection and resources sharing, and user interface customizing are addressed.Originality/valueThis paper describes the general status of Chinese digital library construction. It provides relevance for researchers and the public in China as well as other countries on the DL construction experiences, efforts and achievements. It also highlights the importance and value of sharing experience in DL construction.

We introduce the research of document digitization technology and its applications for constructing digital libraries in China. We focus on two major objectives of document digitization technologies: performance and efficiency. Taking the most representative TH-OCR product as an example, the up-to-date research achievements on both kernel OCR technologies and peripheral technologies in China are presented. The kernel technologies include high performance multilingual (Chinese, Japanese, Korean and English) text recognition, layout analysis, understanding and reconstruction; the peripheral technologies include the network document digitization workflow and intelligent proofreading, which greatly improve the efficiency. The applications of TH-OCR has two types of final output digital documents, one is the reconstructed electronic document with full text and layout information of the original paper-based document, the other is the multilevel document with OCR output text layer under the image layer. Numerous applications indicate that current technologies can greatly facilitate the mass-volume digitization labour in building digital library infrastructure.

Purpose This study aims to examine the factors influencing the adoption intention of information service mashup in digital library (DL). The study is an empirical study on DLs in China. Design/methodology/approach This paper employs the theory of information service mashup as its theoretical background and applies it to the field of DL to develop the measurement model which is based on technology acceptance model (TAM). A structured questionnaire was developed including the demographic information, the advantages of information service mashup in DL and the Likert evaluation of each construct. As a result, of 303 questionnaires distributed among DL users, 281 were remained as acceptable answers. The data were processed and analyzed with the aid of the SPSS 20.0 and SmartPLS 2.0. Findings The results show that beyond perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use, both perceived integration and perceived risk have direct impacts on user’s intention to adopt information service mashup in DL. Perceived integration has the dramatic positive effects, while perceived risk negatively correlates to adoption intention. Moreover, perceived integration and individualization have positive impacts on perceived ease of use, while network externality positively influences perceived usefulness. Originality/value Information service mashup is still a relatively new technology in DL. There were few theoretical and empirical studies that examine the user adoption behaviour of the service. This study contributes to existing information service mashup application studies by modifying and extending TAM. The results would help the DL gain a deeper understanding of the factors affecting DL user adoption of information service mashup.

Continuous globalization and requirements for sustainable products increases the risks for companies for reputation damages through sustainability violations in their supplier networks. Therefore effective management of sustainability risks is essential for companies. This paper aims at identifying factors that enable companies to implement an effective risk management system with regard to social, environmental and economic risks of their supply chain. A model is elaborated that represents the internal enablers that promote the development of an effective sustainability risk management system within the supplier network. Afterwards this model has been operationalized and validated by using semi-structured interviews with experts from one enterprise. It was determined that besides supply chain complexity the support of the top management is decisive for initiating and establishing necessary processes as well as for the provision of the necessary resources which in turn enables implementing an effective risk management system regarding sustainability risks from the supply chain.
