Abstract

A function describing the additional potential due to the free oscillations of the Earth's body is transformed (by solving the outer Dirichlet problem) into the perturbing potential, which is then expressed in terms of orbital Keplerian elements. This result is used in Lagrange Planetary Equations to evaluate perturbations in semimajor axis (as an example) due to the free oscillations. The frequencies of perturbing terms are sought. This is a first attempt to analyze quantitatively the response of satellite orbits to the Earth's free oscillations; further analyses for very precise satellite orbits (like those of TOPEX/Poseidon or LAGEOS-type orbits) may follow in future.
