Abstract

This work presents a new configuration of power factor correction (PFC) based isolated Sheppard-Taylor converter for feeding brushless DC (BLDC) motor drive. In this work, fundamental frequency switching (FFS) of voltage source inverter (VSI) is used for reducing the switching losses in six solid-state switches of the VSL This is achieved by electronic commutation of BLDC motor and the DC bus voltage of the VSI feeding BLDC motor is controlled for adjusting the speed of BLDC motor. An operation of triple-discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) is used for proposed isolated-Sheppard Taylor converter for voltage control and PFC is achieved inherently at the AC mains using a single DC link voltage sensing. Performance evaluation of proposed drive is carried out at varying speeds and supply voltages with PFC operation at AC mains. The power quality indices thus achieved are within the limits of IEC 61000-3-2.
