Abstract
In this article we present a novel, essentially analytical, method based on a perturbation approach, for the resolution of the direct scattering problem associated with the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, for the initial condition of several first-order solitons reasonably far apart. The method is suitable for the determination not only of the eigenvalues of the scattering problem, but also of the eigenfunctions and so of the complete scattering data. Illustrative application examples are presented. The results obtained, when compared with those found with the help of a purely numerical method, show close agreement. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
