Abstract

New Zealand has a small population: the last headcount took place on the 7 t h of March 2006 and showed a census night population of 4,143,282 of whom 115,355 were non-residents. Figure 1 displays a time series of the total population since 1901, with projections up to 2061. By the middle of the 21 s t century, the population is expected to be similar to that of Scotland at present but under the 'low growth' projection the population may peak at around 4.8 million by 2041.
