Abstract

The blood culture (BC) contamination rate in our hospital’s Emergency department (ED) was high in Calendar Year (CY) 2011 compared to the national benchmark of ≤ 3%. This led to increased health care costs, increased length of stay, over utilization of resources, unnecessary antibiotic use and physician dissatisfaction. The estimated additional cost of each contaminated BC is $5,000. We deployed Six Sigma Methodology to reduce our BC contamination rate in the ED.
