Abstract

In this paper, we consider the performance of object retrieval in electronic documents and records management (EDRM) systems. In such systems, general object sizes (images, documents, audio and video files, etc.) may have a high variance. In practice, these systems have to cope with escalating number of large objects. This causes additional pressure on the underlying mechanisms to maintain an adequate performance. First, we discuss three typical approaches to the large object storage handling used in nowadays EDRM systems based on a database and file system. To analyze object retrieval performance in typical EDRM system configuration, we have built appropriate testing tools instead of using standard benchmark tools. We explore the impact of object size on retrieval time and discuss measured object retrieval performance in respect to its size.
