Abstract

A compilation was made of all animals mentioned in proverbs of predatory content found in two lists of Russian proverbs [Langnas (1960) : N = 1200; Pauper Press ( 1960) : N = 4311. Separate rallies were made for the incidence of all proverbs referring to such animals, and for those which specifically had predatory content. This procedure was repeated for two lists of proverbs from non-Russian sources [Christy ( 1888) : N = 19,000; and Davidoff ( 1946) : N = 1400]. The proportionate difference in incidence for the languages for the predatory acts (41% for Russian and 13% for the other languages) was found to be significant ($, p < ,001 ) . Signiflcanr differences were also found for Car and Sheep ($ < .01), and for Chicken ( p < ,001) . The differences for Fox and Wolf approached significance (.05 < p < . l o ) . Percentages for the incidence of predatory acts in the larger classifications may be found in Table 1.
