Abstract

Review of Robert Aziz's The Syndetic Paradigm, Albany, NY: State University of New York, 2007. Aziz offers criticism of Freud, but his book is primarily a sustained criticism of Jung's ideas. At the same time, he claims to present a replacement system, which he calls a new paradigm. Aziz's approach is to summarize Freud's and Jung's ideas in terms of six principles, five of which are Jung's and one Freud's. Alongside these principles, he offers his replacement principles. Aziz provides a useful amplification of Jung's “Self” by using self-organization from complexity theory. Many of Aziz's criticisms do not stand up to careful scrutiny, however. The fundamental disagreement between Aziz and Jung is whether God or self-organizing Nature is innately good or amoral. On this issue, Jung's view is more realistic. All things considered, Aziz's effort is not a new paradigm.
