Abstract

Measurement of the spatial distribution of light transmitted through an arbitrary twisted nematic structure placed between crossed polarizers enables numerical evaluation of the average tilt angle in twisted nematic cells to be carried out without disturbance to the director configuration due to magnetic or electric fields. The measurement procedure is well suited for batch production testing as well as for research purposes, since no special measuring sample cells have to be prepared. Input data required for the numerical procedure are the twist angle and optical refractive indices of the liquid crystal material. Measurement accuracy of at least ±0.1° has been achieved for tilt bias angles less than 5°.
