Abstract

Galvanized steel welded joints are susceptible to porosities since their protective zinc layer may be evaporated and trapped during welding. In this study, a novel approach of identifying voids and porosities is developed by performing a pattern matrix of micro-indentation hardness tests in the cross-section of welds. The hardness grid is then visualized by 3D contour plots to identify the form and position of porosities. This method is investigated on laser-welded galvanized steel plates with reinforcement in which low hardness measurements in the welding area present voids, porosities, and unexpected gaps between joining and reinforcing plates.
