Abstract

A new definition of expert knowledge in expert systems is presented using a refinement of the repertory grid technique of personal construct theory (Kelly, 1955). These refinements involved changing the way ratings are used for expanding and presenting data and the inclusion of a new type of grid, the variable grid, which enables complex information to be presented and rated in an economical manner more fitting to complex problem modelling. These new grids are used alongside normal grids where differences in ratings, instead of similarities, are examined and defined to give clear and concise final ratings of true or false.
