Abstract
A novel 2D beamformer with 2D sixteen beam switching capability was proposed in this paper. Different from just reducing 1D Butler matrix size to achieve compact 2D beamforming network (BFN), the proposed architecture also reduces the complexity of interface connection between the BFN and antenna array. Thanks to the new design concept proposed in this paper, the circuit size is only $\mathbf{2.3\lambda_{0}\times 2.3\lambda_{0}\times 0.2\lambda_{0}}$. This 2D beamformer is very suitable for fabricating by multi-layer technology. It is very convenient to integrate with antenna array due to the similar plane size. Furthermore, the less loss would be achieved due to the elimination of long coaxial cables. To the best of the author's knowledge, this is the first demonstration of such sixteen beams of 2D beamformer by multi-layer PCB technology.
