Abstract
The diffraction formalism of Jovicevic and Sesnic for echelette gratings has been the subject of much controversy. In the present paper it is outlined how the formalism may be altered to make it rigorous. The cases of symmetric and asymmetric groove profiles are considered separately. In the latter situation, two separate modal expansions must be used in the groove region.
