Abstract
By exploring the special structure of the nonlinear terms in the ideal MHD equations, we obtain new sufficient conditions for the conservation of energy and cross-helicity. These conditions improve those given in Caflisch et al (1997 Commun. Math. Phys. 184 443–55) and Kang-Lee (2007 Nonlinearity 20 2681–9).
