Abstract
A new occurrence of alkali basalt is reported from the Deccan Volcanic Province, near Bhir. The thickness of the flow is 60 m. Petrographically these basalts are composed essentially of plagioclase feldspars (labradorite), augite, olivine, iron oxide and glass. Fifteen representative rock samples have been analyzed for major oxides, trace elements and REE. These alkali basalts are characterized by low SiO 2 and high TiO 2, Na 2O, K 2O and P 2O 5. They are enriched in LILE (Rb, Ba and Zr) and REE. The composition of these rocks was probably controlled by different degrees of melting and/or inhomogenities in the mantle source
