Abstract

The study of the SrCoO system has allowed to isolate a new layered cobaltite [Sr 2CoO 3][CoO 2] 1.8. The structural analysis by transmission electron microscopy shows a composite structure consisting in two substructures related to triple rock–salt-type layers and single CdI 2-type layer, respectively. The structure of this compound is similar to that of the well-known misfit cobaltite [Ca 2CoO 3][CoO 2] 1.62, also called “Ca 3Co 4O 9”. The latter is intensively studied for thermoelectric power application to convert waste heat energy into electricity at temperature well above 300 K. A large thermoelectric power is also found for this new cobaltite [Sr 2CoO 3][CoO 2] 1.8, which exhibits a Seebeck coefficient such as S 300 K ≈110 μV K −1. This value, lower than that of [Ca 2CoO 3][CoO 2] 1.62 ( S 300 K ≈125 μV K −1), shows that the misfit character, quantified by the ratio b 1/ b 2=1.8 and 1.62 for the “Sr” and “Ca” based misfit cobaltites, respectively, is directly connected to the thermoelectric properties in these materials.
