Abstract

Abstract A New and General Synthesis of Polycyclic Fluoranthenes is Described. The Key Step is a Michael Addition of 9-Fluorenyl anion to α-Methylene Ketones, Followed by Cyclodehydration and Aromatization. The Versatility of this Synthetic Strategy was Demonstrated by the Preparation of Several Substituted Fluoranthenes and Polycyclic Fluoranthenes. The Sterically-Driven Double Wagner-Meerwein Rearrangement in the Synthesis of this Class of Molecules is also Discussed.
