A New Survey of the Birds of Moldova Region (Romania)

ABSTRACTThis paper describes a survey of the birds in Moldova Region (Romania) in the present day. Its focus is on ecological information and distribution, as well as on rare and endangered species. As well as providing information for ecologists, the survey will contribute to future archaeozoological work in the Moldova Region, where the bird fauna of the past is still not well known. During 2008–2012, we set up a monitoring programme that aimed to estimate the diversity of bird species. To build a complete database for Moldavian bird species, it was necessary to make observations in the different habitat types: wetlands, anthropogenic areas, pastures, orchards and forest ecosystems. As a result of this programme, compared with 1837, when Cihac reported over 200 species of birds, now there are now an estimated 284 species. The increased number of species recorded in the Moldova Region is due to the enrichment of ornithological information on the one hand and on the other hand to the higher number of ornithologists who are doing research in the field. Some species have expanded their distribution further north (e.g. long‐legged buzzard), but the unequivocal climate change, the drastic changes of habitat and changed agricultural policies have all led to the extinction of species such as the great bustard, little bustard, vultures and others. The main factors that affect the bird populations at a local level in this region are the changes in the agricultural and forestry policies, the changes in weather‐related parameters that have a deep impact on habitats but also the lack of ecological education of the population. Unlike in other similar regions, in Moldova, human impact has had a very low influence on the distribution of bird species, but we cannot say the same for bird numbers that have declined in recent years. Diversity of bird in Timbanuh Hiking Track, Gunung Rinjani National Park, Lombok, Indonesia

Timbanuh Hiking Track is one of the hiking tracks in Gunung Rinjani National Park. This track has four types of potential habitats for birds. This research aims to map bird diversity and their distribution along the Timbanuh Hiking Track. Data collection uses the point count method. Observations were carried out eight times, with a repetition period of two weeks. Bird diversity was analyzed using the Shannon Wiener Diversity Index. Scatterplots are used to map the distribution of birds along hiking track. The results show that on the Timbanuh Hiking Track there are 46 species of birds belonging to 29 families, with a high species diversity index of 3.52. The distribution of bird species is closely related to the four types of habitats on the track. There are four species of birds that are protected based on Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation Number P.106 of 2018, as well as two species with Near Threatened status according to IUCN. The high diversity of birds, the existence of protected bird species, and the threatened status of birds mean that conservation efforts need to be increased by developing bird habitats along hiking track.

Species Richness of Breeding Birds at a Landscape Scale: Which Habitat Type is the Most Important?

Abstract. The aim of the study was to compare different habitat types according to species richness and estimate their value for total species richness at a landscape level. The study was carried out in the years 1995–2001 in the Tarnow region (1400 km2, S Poland). All bird species were classified according to broadly defined breeding habitat type. Four main, easily distinguishable habitat types were specified: forests (18% of the area), open areas (70%), wetlands (1%) and anthropogenic areas (11%). Birds were classified as habitat specialists if they bred in only one habitat type, or as habitat generalists, if they bred in two or more habitat types. Altogether, 151 species nested in the study area, and a total of 87 species were habitat specialists. There were statistically more endangered species (so called “losers”) among the habitat specialists than in the habitat generalists' group. Vegetation and Avifauna Distribution in the Serengeti National Park

In order to examine the bird species changes within different vegetation structures, the variations were compared between Commiphora-dominated vegetations with those of Vachellia tortilis and Vachellia robusta-dominated vegetations, and also compared the birds of grassland with those of Vachellia drepanolobium and Vachellia seyal-dominated vegetations. This study was conducted between February 2010 and April 2012. A total of 40 plots of 100 m × 100 m were established. Nonparametric Mann-Whitney U-test was used to examine differences in bird species between vegetations. Species richness estimates were obtained using the Species Diversity and Richness. A total of 171 bird species representing 103 genera, 12 orders, and 54 families were recorded. We found differences in bird species distribution whereby V. tortilis has higher bird species richness (102 species), abundance, and diversity when compared with Commiphora with 66 species and V. robusta with 59 species. These results suggest that variations in bird species abundance, diversity, and distribution could be attributed to differences in the structural diversity of vegetation. Therefore it is important to maintain different types of vegetation by keeping the frequency of fire to a minimum and prescribed fire should be employed and encouraged to control wildfire and so maintain a diversity of vegetation and birds community.

Birds in a Tropical Mosaic - the Distribution of Bird Species in Relation to Vegetation Patterns

Wilson and Bowman (1986) classified and mapped vegetation in a complex mosaic at Howard's Peninsula, Northern Territory. The relationship of bird distribution to this vegetation classification was considered through 10 repeat censuses of 5 replicate quadrats in each of 20 vegetation units. Censusing period was April-May. 118 bird species were recorded. Closed forests (3 units), mangroves (2 units) and swamplands (3 units) all had distinctive bird species compositions, but bird species showed a relatively poor relationship with the classification of woodland and grassland units. Eucalyptus woodlands regrowing after devastation by a cyclone in 1974 had similar bird species diversity and density to undamaged woodlands, though somewhat different bird species composition. Eucalyptus woodlands with a dense shrubby understorey had significantly greater bird density and species diversity than those with open or grassy understories and their bird species composition showed appreciable association with that of closed forests. Closed forest and, less so, mangrove units had highest diversity and density (despite their relatively small proportion in the study area and in the region generally), probably because they offered a wider range of foraging possibilities.

Bird Diversity in Nensebo Moist Afromontane Forest Fragment, South Eastern Ethiopia.

Background: Birds are one component of biodiversity. Ethiopia is rich in biodiversity resources. The avian diversity record is far from complete. There is no scientifically documented information on bird species composition and abundance at Nensebo forest. The objective of the study was to assess species composition, relative abundance and distribution of birds at Nensebo forest in southern Ethiopia. Methods: We employed a stratified random sampling technique with our study area stratified into two dominant habitat types: moist Afromontane forest and modified habitat. Within strata, we established 20 transect lines of 1km length and 0.25km width to sample 27.75% of the study area. We used line transect count methods aided by binoculars to estimate avian species diversity and distribution. We employed quantitative biodiversity indices, such as Shannon wiener diversity indexes to compare species diversity among habitat types and two way ANOVA to analyze the effect of season and habitat on bird species richness and abundance. Results: A total of 105 bird species consisting of 1 endemic, 8 near endemic, 1 globally threatened and 9 Palearctic migrants were recorded in Nensebo forest. Species richness and abundance varied between habitat types in Nensebo forest with mean species richness greater in modified habitat (mean= 4.70 ±1.65) as compared to moist Afromontane forest habitat (mean= 3.95 ±4.12, F=94.66 P<0.001). Additionally, modified habitat (Shannon diversity index= 4.131) harbored higher diversity of birds as opposed to Afromontane forest habitat (Shannon diversity index=3.79). Conclusion: The Nensebo forest has high avian species diversity including several endemic and endangered species revealing the importance of this site for bird conservation. Although we found that habitat heterogeneity favored bird species diversity, moist Afromontane habitat is critical for forest obligate species. Hence, sustainable bird conservation strategies including land use planning should be initiated for this area.

This research aims to investigate the diversity, distribution, and abundance of avifauna within the Sudd Wetland, a critical ecological zone in South Sudan. The general objective is to provide a comprehensive assessment of bird species across various habitat types within this unique wetland ecosystem. Specific objectives include determining and comparing bird species diversity, distribution, and abundance; relating habitat features to bird abundance; and compiling a detailed checklist of avian species present in the study area. By employing systematic survey methods and statistical analyses, this study seeks to elucidate patterns of avian diversity in relation to environmental variables such as vegetation structure, water availability, and human impact. Understanding these dynamics is vital for conservation efforts and management strategies aimed at preserving the ecological integrity of the Sudd Wetland. This research not only contributes to the existing body of knowledge regarding wetland avifauna but also serves as a baseline for future studies focused on biodiversity conservation in rapidly changing environments.

Assessment of Bird Species Composition, Relative Abundance, and Distributions in East Gojjam Wetland Habitats, Ethiopia

Many bird species depend on wetlands and the surrounding habitats. However, the status of these wetlands, as well as their biodiversity, is poorly understood and maintained. From January to February 2021, we assessed the compositions, relative abundances, and distributions of bird species throughout five wetland habitats in the East Gojjam zone. In each study site, systematic random sampling techniques were applied at a 4 km interval along the wetland habitats. Bray–Curtis cluster analysis was conducted using PAST software. During the study period, Simpson’s Index and Shannon–Wiener Index were also used to assess the diversity of bird species at various study sites. As a result, a total of 55 bird species from 20 families and 9 orders were identified. During the study period, 49 species were classified as least concern, two were critically endangered species, two were vulnerable species, two were endangered species, and one was an endemic species. During the study, overgrazing and agricultural expansion were identified as threats to biodiversity. To conserve the biological richness of these ecosystems, a wetland conservation strategy and a sustainable usage system are required.

List of Species and Conservation Status of Avifauna and Small mammal around Bade Segment Area of River Yobe, Yobe State, Nigeria

The study was carried out to assess a Checklist of avifauna and small mammal species along Bade catchment area of Yobe State, Nigeria. Preliminary survey was conducted around the river, three (3) habitat types were identified; (river bank, farm lands and flood plain). The line transect was 8 km in length. Two (2) transects were established per habitat type, making a total of six (6) transects. The transects were 100 m apart to the left or right in order to avoid double counting of species. A distance of 200m was maintained between each habitat. The data obtained were analyses using descriptive statistics (Frequency tables and Charts were used to portrayed the findings. The result of the study; showed that a total of 50 bird species in 28 families were recorded. RB had the highest individuals of Fifty (50) species while FP has the lowest with ten (10) species. The Bird family Columbidae has the highest number with six (6) of species, while the lowest were Ardeidae, Sturnidae and Tytonidae with one species in each of the habitat types. However, checklist of small mammal species also indicated that a total of 6 species of small mammals belonging to 4 families were identified. The result of the study shows that the family Muridae has 3 species which was the highest number of per family identified in the study area, this is due to the fact that Muridae family are the most common small mammals in the study area. And both bird small species fell under least concern (LC) category except Pallid Harrier Circus macrourus which felled under near threatened (NT) species. However, awareness campaign should also be organize for the residents around the study area on the presence, distribution of bird and small mammal species and also disturbing effect of their activities on bird and small mammal around the segment area of river Yobe.

Effects of Public Agricultural and Forestry Policies on the Livelihoods of Campesino Families in the Bolivian Amazon

In Bolivia, agricultural and forestry policies are more of redistributive nature, and it is difficult trying to understand the complexity of this type of production. In this respect, this chapter addresses agricultural and forestry public policies that operate in the Bolivian Amazon. In particular, we assessed how these policies affect campesinos’ livelihoods inhabiting the community of Trinchera. Our research used the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach as a multidisciplinary perspective as well as a qualitative scale to measure campesino families’ capitals. The results reveal that families possess a very high and high potential in natural and social capitals, whereas the human, physical and financial capitals are on a low and very low levels. Of five agricultural and forestry programs implemented in Trinchera, only two of them have a moderate contribution to the family capitals, and three of them have a low contribution. The human, financial and physical capitals have low values, which restricts the improvement of the families’ life strategies in the community. In order to achieve better livelihoods and quality of life, the community’s visions for the future are focused on achieving a very high and high level in their capitals supported by their natural capital. The community acknowledged that natural and social capitals are fundamental for the development of strategies and livelihoods of its families, and our study recorded that the programs currently implemented in the community do not contribute significantly in the improvement of their capitals. Consequently, we present a discussion indicating that achieving the community’s visions will depend not only on internal but also on external factors to the community.

Species Diversity, Distribution and Relative Abundance of Avifuana in the Mangrove of Karamjal Forest Station, Sundarbans

Study on bird species diversity, distribution and relative abundance is important for conservation efforts in local and national scale. However, bird diversity, distribution and relative abundance are little known in Karamjal Forest Station, Sundarbans. Ecological appraisal of bird species diversity, distribution and relative abundance of the avifauna of the Karamjal Forest Station were conducted from June 2015 to April 2016. A total of 156 bird species was recorded during the study period. Of which, one was globally Critically Endangered, Gyps bengalensis and two were Near Threatened i.e., Gyps himalayensis and Lusciniapectardens. The distribution of bird among habitat type was significantly different (f =22.069, p<0.05, df = 2). Walking trail was inhabited the highest species diversity (H’= 3.77) with the highest evenness (J=0.823) while water body was recorded the lowest species diversity (H’= 2.93) with the lowest evenness (J=0.804), it could have a relation to the availability of food items in the habitat. This study showed that despite huge tourist pressures this forest station harbour diverse avian species and thus this area should be managed in order to enhance the population of avian species.

Importance of climate‐induced tree species composition changes in forecasting the amount of reachable habitat for forest birds

AimBird and tree species distributions will shift along with future climatic conditions through direct effects related to species responses to bioclimatic variables. In addition, tree species composition changes should indirectly drive changes in forest bird habitats. Here, we predicted the effects of climate changes on the amount of reachable habitat for forest birds and teased apart the role of the indirect effects.LocationFrance.MethodsWe projected tree and bird species distributions (2020 and 2050) using generalized additive models which accounted for climatic conditions at a large scale (France) and local environmental conditions at regional scale. The projections combined two scenarios of climate changes (RCP 2.6 and 8.5) and two scenarios of forest management (increase in either deciduous or coniferous stands). We modelled the amount of reachable habitat with landscape graphs and the equivalent connectivity index (EC) for five birds associated to the main forest types of the study area. To differentiate the sources of EC change between 2020 and 2050, we compared two future landscape graphs including only the indirect effect, or the direct and indirect effects of climate changes.ResultsFor birds with low and intermediate thermal maxima, climate‐based distributions were nearly stable over time (absence of direct effects), EC change was only attributed to indirect effects. In contrast, for bird species with high thermal maximum, EC change was mostly driven by direct effects (more favourable climatic conditions) and little by indirect effects.Main conclusionsUsing an innovative modelling framework that bind species distribution and connectivity models with climate and land use changes in forest, we showed that EC dynamics could be completely due to climate‐driven changes in tree species composition. Our results highlight the importance of accounting for the indirect effects of climate changes, especially in forests where major shifts in tree species composition are expected.

Influences of habitat fragmentation on bird species distributions and regional population sizes

A simple modelling approach was used to investigate the influence of habitat fragmentation on the distributions and regional population sizes of passerines breeding in 145 small woods in an arable landscape. Observed distributions in three consecutive years were compared with those predicted by random selection of woods by pairs (based on a Poisson distribution), and by a simulation model based on the area of habitat available and estimates of individual species minimum area requirements and territory sizes. None of the species studied were distributed randomly; some were distributed according to the area of woodland available, whereas others preferred either small or large woods. However, species distributions were influenced by their regional population sizes. When species population sizes were small, observed distributions could be predicted using algorithms based on area alone, but as numbers increased, algorithms using territory parameters were required. An absence of detectable territorial interaction suggested that space for more pairs of the species concerned had been available in our woods. Of the 14 species investigated, the models for only two consistently required the use of territory parameters, indicating that the available habitat could probably have accommodated more pairs of most of the species. Thus habitat fragmentation may reduce regional population sizes more than expected from the loss of habitat alone, to the extent that patches of suitable habitat may be unused, or occupied at low density.

This research aims to determine (1) the types of bird species on Nusa Manu and Nusa Leun Islands, Sawai Village (2) The distribution of bird species on Nusa Manu and Nusa Leun Islands, Sawai Village. This research uses the census method to collect data on bird species. The research results show that there are 13 species of birds on Nusa Manu Island and 12 species of birds on Niusa Leun Island. The highest distribution of bird species on the island of Nusa Manu is black honey (Nectariana aspasia), sriganti honey (Nectariana jugularis), Seram honey (Lichmera monticola) and garden fan (Rhipidura leucophrys) with a frequency of 11.43%, while the lowest distribution of bird species is , sea croak (Butorides striatus) and coral egret (Egretta sacra) with a frequency of 2.86%. The highest bird distribution on Nusa Leun Island is black honey (Nectariana aspasia) and garden fan (Rhipidura leucophrys) with a frequency of 14.29%, while the lowest bird distribution is sea cockerel (Butorides striatus), great egret (Egretta alba). and eastern elephant (Numenius madagascariensis) with a frequency of 3.5-7%.
