Abstract

AbstractAn exact spectrophotometric method has been devised for the evaluation of stability constants of metal complexes. This method is developed for complex‐formation in two steps and is especially useful when complex‐formation occurs in acid solutions where the conventional Calvin‐Bjerrum titration method becomes inaccurate. Knowledge of the extinction coefficients of the different species in the solution is necessary. The method has been successfully applied to the determination of stability constants of the complexes of 8‐hydroxyquinoline and 8‐hydroxyquinoline‐5‐sulphonic acid with copper in ethanol/water mixtures. The conditions are examined which must be satisfied in order to obtain accurate results by this method [equations (11) and (15)].
