Abstract

A new species of fox, Urocyon progressus , has been found in the Upper Pliocene Rexroad Formation of Meade County, Kansas. This species is slightly larger than the living gray fox, U. cinereoargenteus (Schreber) and is probably ancestral to it. Other members of the Rexroad local fauna provide evidence that Southwestern Kansas had a milder and more humid climate during the late Pliocene than is found in the area today. The fossil fox supports this hypothesis.
