Abstract

A new species in the Simulium vernum group is described from Berchtesgaden National Park, Germany, on the basis of its polytene chromosomes and all life stages except the egg. The species is morphologically similar to Simulium carpathicum (Knoz), but differs in each of these life stages and chromosomally by four fixed inversions and by having a partial chromocentre and a unique Y-chromosome rearrangement. Adults and larvae had been misidentified by previous workers as Simulium carpathicum and Simulium dolomitense (Rivosecchi), respectively. The larvae and pupae live predominantly in rocky springs above the timberline.
