A new species of Myrcia s. lat. (Myrtaceae) from the eastern Amazon

Abstract Myrcia spiciformis , a new species from the eastern Amazon, is described and illustrated. It is characterized by twigs with dense rufous pubescence, a spiciform panicle, pedicels absent or up to 3 mm long, and flowers with 4–5 sepals. The staminal ring is glabrous and the hypanthium is pubescent. Morphologically, M . spiciformis is related to M . coumete . The new species is endemic to the Amazon Biome, with records from Maranhão and Pará states, where it grows in both non-flooded upland ( terra-firme ) and seasonally flooded ( várzea ) forests. It is provisionally assessed as Endangered (EN) according to the IUCN Red List criteria, due to restricted distribution of the species and vegetation loss resulting from anthropogenic pressure in the occurrence area.

Plant Diversity Hotspots in the Atlantic Coastal Forests of Brazil

Plant-diversity hotspots on a global scale are well established, but smaller local hotspots within these must be identified for effective conservation of plants at the global and local scales. We used the distributions of endemic and endemic-threatened species of Myrtaceae to indicate areas of plant diversity and conservation importance within the Atlantic coastal forests (Mata Atlântica) of Brazil. We applied 3 simple, inexpensive geographic information system (GIS) techniques to a herbarium specimen database: predictive species-distribution modeling (Maxent); complementarity analysis (DIVA-GIS); and mapping of herbarium specimen collection locations. We also considered collecting intensity, which is an inherent limitation of use of natural history records for biodiversity studies. Two separate areas of endemism were evident: the Serra do Mar mountain range from Paraná to Rio de Janeiro and the coastal forests of northern Espírito Santo and southern Bahia. We identified 12 areas of approximately 35 km(2) each as priority areas for conservation. These areas had the highest species richness and were highly threatened by urban and agricultural expansion. Observed species occurrences, species occurrences predicted from the model, and results of our complementarity analysis were congruent in identifying those areas with the most endemic species. These areas were then prioritized for conservation importance by comparing ecological data for each.

New Insights From Pre-Columbian Land Use and Fire Management in Amazonian Dark Earth Forests

Anthropogenic climate change driven by increased carbon emissions is leading to more severe fire seasons and increasing the frequency of mega-fires in the Amazon. This has the potential to convert Amazon forests from net carbon sinks to net carbon sources. Although modern human influence over the Earth is substantial, debate remains over when humans began to dominate Earth’s natural systems. To date, little is known about the history of human land use in key regions like the Amazon. Here, we examine the history of human occupation from a ~8,500 year-old sediment core record from Lake Caranã (LC) in the eastern Amazon. The onset of pre-Columbian activity at LC (~4,500 cal yr B.P.) is associated with the beginning of fire management and crop cultivation, later followed by the formation of Amazonian Dark Earth soils (ADEs) ~2,000 cal yr B.P. Selective forest enrichment of edible plants and low-severity fire activity altered the composition and structure of forests growing on ADEs (ADE forests) making them more drought susceptible and fire-prone. Following European colonization (1661 A.D.), the Amazon rubber boom (mid-1800s to 1920 A.D.) is associated with record-low fire activity despite drier regional climate, indicating fire exclusion. The formation of FLONA Reserve in 1974 A.D. is accompanied by the relocation of traditional populations and a fire suppression policy. Despite suppression efforts, biomass burning and fire severity in the past decade is higher than any other period in the record. This is attributed to combined climate and human factors which create optimal conditions for mega-fires in ADE forests and threatens to transform the Amazon from a net carbon sink to a net carbon source. To help mitigate the occurrence of mega-fires, a fire management policy reducing fire-use and careful fire management for farming may help to reduce fuel loads and the occurrence of mega-fires in fire-prone ADE forests. As both natural and anthropogenic pressures are projected to increase in the Amazon, this study provides valuable insights into the legacy of past human land use on modern ADE forest composition, structure, and flammability that can inform ecological benchmarks and future management efforts in the eastern Amazon.

Anthropogenic environmental pressures in urban conservation units: a case study in Belém, Brazilian eastern Amazon

Over 70% of the Amazon inhabitants live in cities. Moreover, the contest between urban and green areas is historically known. In this scenario, the green areas in the Eastern Amazon cities are now beneath constant pressure and some of its ecosystem services can be reduced because of environmental stress. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate environmental stressors in two urban conservation units in the Brazilian Eastern Amazon. To understand how the urbanisation affected both the eutrophication process and forest resilience in the study area, we investigated the literature about the urban sprawl in Belém city and analysed, through remote sensing techniques, the responses for vegetation and built-up indices in the last 30 years. The results showed that the city expansion had not considered sustainable criteria, which ultimately intensified the anthropic eutrophication of the Bolonha Lake. Despite anthropogenic and climate pressures in the last decades over the green areas of Belém, the forest within the park showed no signal of reduced resilience. Lastly, joint efforts are necessary to improve wastewater treatment in the Metropolitan Region of Belém, so the water quality of the reservoirs improve, and its macrophytes blooming reduce gradually.

High seroprevalence of Rickettsia spp. and molecular detection of Rickettsia amblyommatis in human-biting ticks from the eastern Amazon, Brazil.

In Brazil, spotted fever (SF) is caused by the bacteria Rickettsia parkeri and Rickettsia rickettsii. Seroepidemiological data on Rickettsia spp. in humans are rare in Brazil and nonexistent in the Amazon biome. We sought to quantify antibodies reactive to Rickettsia spp. in serum samples collected from humans in the Amazonia biome, and to detect Rickettsia spp. in ticks parasitizing these hosts. Human blood samples were collected from three different locations within the eastern Amazon in Maranhão State, northeastern Brazil between 2010 and 2018. Sera generated from those samples were tested for the presence of antibodies reactive to Rickettsia by immunofluorescence assay (IFA) using crude antigens from five Rickettsia isolates from Brazil: R. rickettsii strain Taiaçu, R. amblyommatis strain Ac37, Rickettsia rhipicephali strain HJ5, R. parkeri strain At24, and Rickettsia bellii strain Mogi. Between 2020 and 2025, ticks were manually collected while attached to the skin of humans in seven municipalities in Maranhão State. Adult ticks were randomly selected and individually processed for DNA extraction and examined using a real-time PCR (qPCR) assay targeting a fragment of the rickettsial gltA gene. The qPCR-positive samples were subsequently examined by conventional PCR (cPCR) targeting the ompA gene of SFG rickettsiae. The cPCR amplicons were purified and sequenced bidirectionally using the amplification primers. The resulting sequences were compared with those in GenBank using BLASTn to identify related Rickettsia spp. A total of 341 human serum samples were analyzed, and 145 (42.5%) were recorded as reactive with at least one species of Rickettsia. Among the reactive samples, 68 (47%) were from Imperatriz, 45 (31%) from Açailândia, and 32 (22%) from the municipality of São Luís. Rickettsia rhipicephali was recorded as the possible antigen involved in a homologous reaction (PAIHR) in one individual, R. amblyommatis in five, and R. bellii in three. A total of 187 ticks were collected parasitizing humans in the Amazon biome. Molecular analyses revealed that Rickettsia DNA was present in 44.4% (4/9) of A. cajennense s.s. from Açailândia, 52.4% (22/42) from Centro Novo do Maranhão, and 0% (0/8) from Imperatriz. Among the adults of A. coelebs from Centro Novo do Maranhão, 36.8% (7/19) tested positive. In contrast, all adults of A. oblongoguttatum from the same location tested negative (0/20). This is the first study to detect anti-Rickettsia antibodies in humans and to identify R. amblyommatis in ticks parasitizing humans in the Amazon biome. The detection of R. amblyommatis in human-biting ticks, together with concurrent seropositivity in human sera from the same region, supports the hypothesis that this agent is actively circulating in the Amazon biome and may be responsible for undiagnosed cases of nonlethal spotted fever in the area.

Anthropogenic pressures on tropical forests are rapidly intensifying, but our understanding of their implications for biological diversity is still very limited, especially with regard to soil biota, and in particular soil bacterial communities. Here we evaluated bacterial community composition and diversity across a gradient of land use intensity in the eastern Amazon from undisturbed primary forest, through primary forests varyingly disturbed by fire, regenerating secondary forest, pasture, and mechanized agriculture. Soil bacteria were assessed by paired-end Illumina sequencing of 16S rRNA gene fragments (V4 region). The resulting sequences were clustered into operational taxonomic units (OTU) at a 97% similarity threshold. Land use intensification increased the observed bacterial diversity (both OTU richness and community heterogeneity across space) and this effect was strongly associated with changes in soil pH. Moreover, land use intensification and subsequent changes in soil fertility, especially pH, altered the bacterial community composition, with pastures and areas of mechanized agriculture displaying the most contrasting communities in relation to undisturbed primary forest. Together, these results indicate that tropical forest conversion impacts soil bacteria not through loss of diversity, as previously thought, but mainly by imposing marked shifts on bacterial community composition, with unknown yet potentially important implications for ecological functions and services performed by these communities.

New plastomes of eight Ipomoea species and four putative hybrids from Eastern Amazon

Ipomoea is a large pantropical genus globally distributed, which importance goes beyond the economic value as food resources or ornamental crops. This highly diverse genus has been the focus of a great number of studies, enriching the plant genomics knowledge, and challenging the plant evolution models. In the Carajás mountain range, located in Eastern Amazon, the savannah-like ferruginous ecosystem known as canga harbors highly specialized plant and animal populations, and Ipomoea is substantially representative in such restrictive habitat. Thus, to provide genetic data and insights into whole plastome phylogenetic relationships among key Ipomoea species from Eastern Amazon with little to none previously available data, we present the complete plastome sequences of twelve lineages of the genus, including the canga microendemic I. cavalcantei, the closely related I. marabaensis, and their putative hybrids. The twelve plastomes presented similar gene content as most publicly available Ipomoea plastomes, although the putative hybrids were correctly placed as closely related to the two parental species. The cavalcantei-marabaensis group was consistently grouped between phylogenetic methods. The closer relationship of the I. carnea plastome with the cavalcantei-marabaensis group, as well as the branch formed by I. quamoclit, I. asarifolia and I. maurandioides, were probably a consequence of insufficient taxonomic representativity, instead of true genetic closeness, reinforcing the importance of new plastome assemblies to resolve inconsistencies and boost statistical confidence, especially the case for South American clades of Ipomoea. The search for k-mers presenting high dispersion among the frequency distributions pointed to highly variable coding and intergenic regions, which may potentially contribute to the genetic diversity observed at species level. Our results contribute to the resolution of uncertain clades within Ipomoea and future phylogenomic studies, bringing unprecedented results to Ipomoea species with restricted distribution, such as I. cavalcantei.

Taxonomic growth refers to the objective of gradually assessing the risk of extinction of all the world’s species and periodically repeating such assessments. Geographic growth refers to the increasing number of people around the world interested in performing extinction risk assessments for various groups of organisms in their region or country. The taxonomic challenge, although a large and demanding task, can be addressed by expanding and strengthening the networks of experts organized within the IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC), which represents a significant scaling-up of a well-developed, known model. However, no current structure within the IUCN has the mandate to address the geographic challenge; this requires the creation of new structures or mechanisms. At least 5 key activities must be implemented to effectively integrate the diffuse network of national assessors into the global red listing process: (1) large-scale publicizing of the Guidelines for Application of IUCN Red List Criteria at Regional Levels, and encouraging the work of national assessors; (2) establishing the IUCN Species Programme as the primary trainer and certifier of multipliers; (3) delegating the majority of training to national institutions; (4) creating a virtual data clearing house for national red lists, seamlessly linked to the global list; and (5) consolidating the IUCN Species Programme as the primary endorser of national red list assessments. Hundreds of regional and national red lists will probably be produced in the next decade using the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria, particularly because they are now recognized by international agreements such as the 2010 biodiversity target of the Convention on Biological Diversity and the United Nation’s General Assembly Millennium Development Goals. By catalyzing this process, the IUCN would expand the information on the world’s threatened species, while strengthening local scientific capacity for generating and using these data to support conservation action. Red list assessment and conservation status of gymnosperms from China

Based on the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria (Version 3.1), we assessed native gymnosperm species and infraspecific taxa found in China between March of 2010 and December of 2012. Results indicated that 37 species were critically endangered (CR), 35 species were endangered (EN), 76 species were vulnerable (VU), 87 species were of least concern (LC), and 16 species were data deficient (DD). Up to 59% of the 251 native species of gymnosperms found in China were classified as threatened. Threatening factors impacting gymnosperm species in China were ascribed into seven categories, among which habitat degradation, restricted distribution, and over exploitation were listed as the top three threats. According to results of red list assessments and conservation practices of gymnosperms in China, we propose that conservation of endangered gymnosperm species should have a targeted program. Otherwise, over-protection could result in additional threats to endangered species.

A case study on trade in threatened Tiger Geckos (Goniurosaurus) in Vietnam including updated information on the abundance of the Endangered G. catbaensis

Tiger geckos of the genusGoniurosaurusare considered as a susceptible reptile group, due to their restricted distribution ranges, specialisation to specific microhabitats and generally low population densities. While still new species have been discovered recently,Goniurosaurusspecies are threatened by extinction through habitat loss and collection for the pet trade. Of the 19 described species, for only eight species, the conservation status has been assessed within the IUCN Red List between 2016 and 2018 and all have been classified in the threat categories VU (Vulnerable), EN (Endangered) and CR (Critically Endangered).Goniurosaurusspp. are popular in the international pet market at least since the 1990s and several species experienced local extirpations as a consequence of massive over-collection in the past. However, tiger geckos have not been paid much attention for conservation, amongst others, due to the lack of comprehensive knowledge on their conservation status and biology. This study provides an overview of international trade inGoniurosaurusbased on available data from 1999 to 2018 in the U.S. as well as data from online surveys and interviews in Europe and Vietnam, with the main focus on species native to Vietnam. All five tiger gecko species known from Vietnam were found in the local trade as wild captures for the national and international market and / or in the U.S. and Europe for relatively higher prices. We found that entire trade chains are very long (including several transfers and dealers involved) and that keeping and transport happen under poor conditions. We herein provide updated information on the abundance of the Endangered Cat Ba Tiger Gecko, which was recently shown to not only occur at its type locality, Cat Ba Island, Hai Phong City, North Vietnam, but also to inhabit small offshore islands in the Ha Long Bay, Quang Ninh Province. While the wild effective population was found to be relatively stable on four islands in Ha Long Bay, consisting of about 124 and 129 individuals in July 2017 and April 2018, respectively, the abundance of other sub-populations, impacted by anthropogenic pressures were found to be very low (2–10 individuals). Based on our findings, we propose stringent conservation measures to more efficiently protect wild tiger gecko populations, such as the inclusion in the Governmental Decree in Vietnam, the assessment of remaining species in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and the inclusion in the Appendices of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

Stream fish assemblages in the Eastern Amazon: the role of small tetras (Characidae) in alpha diversity and taxonomic structure

Wallacean shortfalls in knowledge about biodiversity, especially in the Amazon biome, can only be addressed by increasing sampling efforts in focal areas. The objective of this study was to describe the fish fauna of streams associated with four protected areas in the Eastern Amazon. These areas include the Tapajós (Parque Nacional da Amazônia, Parque Nacional do Jamanxim) and Trombetas drainages (Floresta Nacional Saracá-Taquera), and Tapajós/Xingu interfluve (Reserva Biológica Nascentes da Serra do Cachimbo), state of Pará, Brazil. In the 99 stream reaches surveyed, 176 fish species were recorded. Almost a third of the species and specimens belong to the Characidae family, predominantly represented by small tetras (known as piabasor lambaris). One threatened species (Harttia dissidens) was registered. Of the total richness, 24 species were singletons and associated with specific habitats. The highest taxonomic distinctness was observed for Floresta Nacional Saracá-Taquera, while streams within the Parque Nacional da Amazônia exhibited the greatest taxonomic distinctness variation. Compared to existing records in scientific collections covering stream fish fauna in watersheds of up to 4,300 hectares in Pará, our study added the record of eight other genera and identified relevant areas for additional surveys.

Conservation status of the order Rodentia of Brazil: taxonomic and biogeographical patterns

The Global Mammal Assessment (GMA) evaluates the risk of extinction for all species of mammals, providing important data on their status to national and global conservation agencies and conventions. We assessed all of the species of Brazilian rodents as part of the GMA activities of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature Species Survival Commission (IUCN SSC) Small Mammal Specialist Group. A total of 234 species were evaluated against the IUCN Red List Criteria and placed into one of eight categories. Although rodents do not have elevated extinction risk compared to mammals as a whole, several families of caviomorph rodents have high levels of either threat, data deficiency, or both. The family Echimyidae has a large number of species and one-third of those either are species of conservation concern or data deficient. The family Ctenomyidae also is of concern in this regard. There are also strong geographic patterns to threat and poor knowledge. The focal areas for conservation effort are the Atlantic Forest and the Cerrado, and for Data Deficient species Atlantic Forest, Cerrado, and Amazonia, in particular the eastern Amazon. The results highlight the need for targeted field research and the application of ecological and spatial data to the development of conservation actions.

The status of conservation of urban forests in eastern Amazonia

This study aims to identify the remnant tree flora in six forest fragments in the metropolitan area of Belém and to analyze these fragments in terms of biological conservation, species richness and diversity in the local urban landscape. The fragments and their respective sampling areas were as follows: Amafrutas reserve (15 ha), Trambioca Is. reserve (2 ha), Bosque Rodrigues Alves city park (15 ha), Combu Is. reserve (10 ha), Gunma Park reserve (10 ha) and Mocambo reserve (5 ha). Inventories were built from lineal plots of 250 m² and included trees with DBH equal to or greater than 10 cm at a height of 1.3 m above ground. Sixty-nine families and 759 species, of which eight were officially listed as endangered (Brazilian National Flora: Ministry of Environment, Normative Instruction of September, 2008; Pará State Flora: Decree Nº. 802 of February 2008) were recorded. These endangered species are: Aspidosperma desmanthum Benth. ex Müll. Arg. (Apocynaceae), Cedrela odorata L. (Meliaceae), Eschweilera piresii S.A Mori (Lecythidaceae), Euxylophora paraensis Huber (Rutaceae), Hymenolobium excelsum Ducke (Leguminosae), Manilkara huberi (Ducke) Chevalier (Sapotaceae), Tabebuia impetiginosa (Mart. ex DC.) Standl. (Bignoniaceae), Mezilaurus itauba (Meisn.) Taub. ex Mez (Lauraceae) and Qualea coerulea Aubl. (Vochysiaceae). Emergency actions such as implementing management plans for already existing Conservation Units, the creation of new such units in areas of primary forest fragments (as in the case of the Amafrutas reserve), as well as the intensification of actions of surveillance and monitoring, should be undertaken by Federal, State, and Municipal environmental agencies so as to ensure the conservation of these last primary forest remnants in the metropolitan area of Belém.
