Abstract

This study concerns an attempt to investigate the oxidation behavior of an in situ TiB and TiC reinforced titanium matrix composites (TMCs) in air over the temperature range 823–923 K. TMCs exhibited a parabolic oxidation behavior with the activation energy of 312.3 kJ mol −1. The results of oxidation kinetics and oxide scales formed in the test temperature for 1–300 h indicate that TMCs imparts excellent oxidation resistance. A detailed characterization of the microstructure and distribution of the phases within the scale following oxidation studies has been undertaken to suggest the possible mechanism for the oxidation of TMCs.
