Abstract
An electro-optical sensor developed for microdisplacement measurements has been used for linear thermal-expansion measurements. The non-interferometric system gives a precision of 0.2 mu m in the range of 25-200 degrees C for an alumina tube specimen. The simple sensor capable of giving resolution up to 0.01 mu m thus offers an easy method for measuring the thermal expansion of low expansion materials with small specimen size requirements.
