Abstract
In this paper, a Fast and Efficient Variable Block Size Motion Estimation algorithm is proposed for high computational video compression. Variable block size Motion Estimation algorithm decomposes each 16×16 block into 16×16, 16×8, 8×16, 8×8, 8×4, 4×8, 4×4 subsequent blocks and searches for optimum Motion Vector. Without searching for optimum motion vector in these all 7 blocks, here the proposed Edge Information based Mode decision algorithm first decides which block size provides the best motion vector without losing quality (very small motions) and with less computations instead of searching with all possible block sizes using Fast Hexagonal Search Motion Estimation algorithm which is composed by Small Hexagonal Search Pattern and Large Hexagonal Search Pattern. From the Experimental results of proposed algorithm, Computational complexity reduced by 96% of Full search Variable block size Motion Estimation algorithm with slight reduction in coding efficiency(<2% reduction in PSNR for some video samples) by taking less than 5% Computation time relative to Full search.
