Abstract

This article explores possibilities of enhancing the field experience component of a variety of professional programs offered by Canadian universities. The contexts of both higher and more specifically professional education are rapidly changing. Now, more than ever, we are challenged to prepare beginning professionals for the 21 s t century. Some findings about the current state of field experiences in higher education are presented, and issues and ideas from a number of disciplines are discussed in an effort to address some of the chronic issues and dilemmas facing field experience programs. As well, attention is drawn to how field experiences in teacher education might be conceptualized and practiced differently.
