a native speaker with a fair degree of success, he will of course have more recourse to his Spanish knowledge when groping for a phrase than will a student whose Spanish is generally wrong or Englishsounding. In a sense, telling a student he is translating too much is a way of saying that he has hardly any good Spanish to rely on-a situation of which the student is probably all too aware. We need appropriate texts and teaching methods that would allow students to become aware of how to make successful, Spanish-sounding new sentences, relying on their knowledge of language, both their own and the one to be acquired.
