Abstract

We have modeled the depolarized component of diffuse scattering of radar energy from Mars based on a surface distribution of rock abundance derived from thermal-infrared measurements. Two physically plausible models for the orientation of surface rocks were used, and plots of scattering cross section as a function of Doppler shift were derived. The modeled spectral shapes showed some similarities to observed sectra and in general had a magnitudes within about a factor of 2 of measured values. Surface inhomogeneities may account for the discrepancies between measured and modeled spectra but scattering by subsurface elements may also play an important role.
